'The Gap'
I originally wrote this piece for myself to fill in what I called "the gap" in Ever After. It picks up after Prince Henry proposes to Danielle and ends after Leonardo da Vinci unveils Danielle's painting.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
****Part1******
They were still laughing as he put her down and kissed her again. Then the Prince looked around, remembering where he was. Actually, he was looking for the Captain of the Guard.
"Laurent," Prince Henry said, "Go find the others and head back to the castle. Tell my parents that I will arrive soon with my future bride."
He smiled, still looking at Danielle. As Laurent headed off to find the others, Danielle looked up at Henry.
"How did you know where I was?" Danielle asked.
Prince Henry laughed. He touched her cheek. "Jacqueline told me you were here. It was that servant you rescued who told me you were sold."
"His name is Maurice, sire. I mean.."
"Henry." They both said it together and laughed.
"We'd better get started." Henry said, preparing his horse for the ride back. "My mother and father have no idea where I am."
"Weren't you supposed to get married this morning?" Danielle asked.
Henry laughed again. "I couldn't go through with it. Turns out she is also in love with someone else."
"Who, Marguerite?"
The Prince turned to look at her. "Who?"
"My stepmother said you were going to marry."Danielle stopped. She already said far too much.
"The Princess of Spain," Henry finished the sentence. He frowned.
"Who's your stepmother?"
"The Baroness" Danielle said, not afraid anymore. "Jacqueline and Marguerite are my stepsisters. My father brought the Baroness to the manor when I was 8. He died the next day."
"What?" It was all he could think to say.
Danielle nodded. "My father asked me to help teach the Baroness "the ropes." That she wasn't used to getting her hands dirty. I have been her servant ever since, at least, she treated me that way."
"Your stepmother sold you?" Henry could hardly believe what he was hearing.
"Only to get me out of the way so that you could marry.."
"Marguerite." Henry and Danielle finished it together. Henry smiled at that, and then he shook his head. He picked up Danielle's chin with his fingers. "I promise you, Danielle", he said, "You'll never be hurt again." He looked around. "Come," he said, "it's getting late and we should head for home."
****Part2******
It was noon when they arrived at the castle. He helped Danielle down from the horse and almost bumped into Laurent and Jacqueline.
"Danielle", Jacqueline cried as she ran over to hug her. "I was so worried. How did you ever get out of there?"
Danielle hugged her, then held her away. "Prince Henry rescued me!" she answered and looked at Henry, who didn't know how to react. Laurent smiled, trying not to laugh. Jacqueline noticed it, though.
"I'm sure you were wonderful, your Highness," she said, still pressing the issue. She wasn't getting any answers.
"Thank you, Jacqueline," Henry answered, looking at Danielle. He smiled.
"By the way," he continued, "my name is Henry." Jacqueline looked at him, then at Danielle. They were giggling together, almost as if they were sharing a secret.
"Come, Henry, Danielle," Laurent said, "Your Mother and Father are looking for you."
"Both of us?" Henry asked, looking up at him, but Laurent and Jacqueline had gone.
---
King Francis and Queen Marie were sitting in the garden talking. They had just finished trying to calm the King and Queen of Spain. Marie heard the talking and laughter and turned around. She saw Laurent and Jacqueline but not, wait a minute, there he is with Danielle. Just as I thought. He's never looked this happy in his life. Francis caught her looking and stood up to greet them.
"Just go easy on him, Francis." Marie said, "He is in love."
"I can see that," Francis said watching Henry and Danielle. They're holding hands, the King thought, I have never seen him like this. The four of them walked over to where the King and Queen were standing.
"Mother, Father," Henry said taking a deep breath, "I have made my choice. This is the Lady Danielle, daughter of Sir Auguste de Barbarac and the Lady Nicole de Lancret." Danielle curtsied.
"Your Majesties" she said, getting up. Then she looked at Henry, a little puzzled. He just looked back at her, a smile playing on his lips.
"We have heard a lot about you, my child." Queen Marie said to Danielle, although she was looking at Jacqueline and Laurent.
King Francis changed the subject. "Don't you think that we should get started with this wedding?" he said. "I do believe that we have waited long enough." Marie stared at him.
"Francis," she scolded, playfully. "Is that all you have on your mind?"
Henry stared at them. "I have your blessing then?"
"You really didn't need our blessing, did you?" Marie asked. She smiled at Danielle and took her hand. "Come, Jacqueline, we must get Danielle ready for the ceremony. We'll talk on the way." Francis clapped Henry on the back as he watched the three of them walk towards the castle.
"She is amazing, Henry. How did you ever find her?"
"You could say we kept bumping into each other." Henry smiled, thinking about the apples. Then he remembered what had happened earlier that morning and the smile disappeared. "I am sorry, Father, about Spain," he said.
"Henry," Francis said, "Everything's worked out. We let you make your choice because we thought you needed more time to get your thoughts in order, for you to calm down. Danielle seems to have done that and for that I am happy." Henry looked at him. He was smiling again. "You do love her, don't you? " Francis said, "She does make you happy?" Henry's smile became a grin. The King continued. "I mean, you are going to marry her, are you not?" "Yes, Father," Henry almost laughed. He had never felt this excited about anything before in his life. He was actually looking forward to it.
****** Part 3 ****
At half past one, Henry and Danielle exchanged vows in the small chapel inside the castle. It was a small private ceremony with the King and Queen in attendance along with Jacqueline, Laurent and Leonardo da Vinci.
It concluded at the stroke of two and, at the Queen's request, Laurent escorted Jacqueline back to the manor. He explained that the King and Queen were working on a plan of revenge for Rodmilla and her daughter. Until then, the marriage would be kept secret.
"What's going to happen to my mother and sister? How are they going to keep the wedding a secret?" Jacqueline asked question after question as Laurent put her in the coach.
"I wouldn't worry about it," he said. "It will be taken care of." He closed the door and climbed up on his horse. As soon as they arrived, Laurent jumped down and opened the coach door. "I will return for you and your family at half past three. " Laurent whispered as he helped Jacqueline out of the coach. "Remember, do not breathe a word to anyone until Prince Henry or I tell you to do so." Jacqueline understood and nodded her head yes. "I understand she's your mother, but sometimes.." Laurent never finished.
"These things have to be done," Jacqueline said. "I just hope whatever they do, it will be fair."
"I assure you," Laurent answered, "it will be." Laurent watched as she walked towards the manor door. As soon as she walked in, however, she was quickly herded over to a midday supper of soup and fresh baked bread. Over the meal, the Baroness and Marguerite plied Jacqueline with questions about what was going on at the castle and the fate of Prince Henry.
"How was I to know he would come flying out the side door!" Jacqueline said, "He was supposed to be getting married."
"I heard the Prince talked to you." Marguerite said. "What did he say?"
The Baroness leaned in a little to hear Jacqueline's answer.
"Well," she answered finally, "I can't be sure. It all happened so quickly. But I think what he said was 'Serves me right for choosing a foreigner over your" she hesitated, then continued, "sister.'" The Baroness and Marguerite looked at each other and smiled.
"Well," the Baroness said. "Very good. Well, perhaps we'll just let him fret about it for a few days."
The two of them giggled and continued to eat with Jacqueline watching both of them with a sly smile. The doorbell caught them by surprise.
"I'll get it," all three of them cried in unison.
Marguerite got to the door first, followed by Rodmilla, leaving Jacqueline far behind. Marguerite opened it and saw Laurent standing there. In back of him was the King's own coach.
"His Supreme Majesty King Francis," he announced, "requests an audience with the Baroness Rodmilla de Ghent and her daughters immediately."
"Oh, is anything wrong?" the Baroness asked. She had pushed her way to the front.
"No, milady," Laurent said. "The King demanded that you arrive in style."
"Hmm, then in style we shall be," Rodmilla answered. The Baroness and Marguerite ran from the door giggling while Jacqueline stood there, still looking at Laurent. They smiled at each other knowingly while Jacqueline closed the door.
**** Part 4 ****
Meanwhile, Henry and Danielle found they had at least an hour of quiet time. Henry took her to the garden maze on the side of the castle. The Prince knew how to get to the middle of it or so he said, he had been playing in it for years. Only when they entered, Henry forgot which way to go. They laughed as they made their way toward the middle. Danielle got there first and waited until Henry caught up.
"I thought you knew the way," Danielle smiled up at him.
"Got me again," Henry said, laughing. He put his arms around her. "I thought I remembered. You must be some winged angel in disguise come down to show me the way."
"You never know," Danielle answered.
They both laughed. Henry kissed her lightly on the lips. "Hello, Princess," he whispered.
"Milord," she answered. Henry laughed and took her hand. He led her to a bench on the side of the maze.
"Henry," she said, "I'd like to ask you something, if you don't mind? Why did you lie about my parents?"
"You mean about the "Lady" thing? It's not a lie," Henry said, "it's true."
"What are you talking about?"
"Well," Henry said, "last night, after the ball, I couldn't sleep.
Leonardo brought me your shoe and I sat up all night staring at it. I tried to see him, but he was asleep, so I went to the castle library. Some of the old records are kept there. I searched through them, looking for your mother's name. It took some time, but I finally found it."
Danielle stared at him as Henry continued.
"Your mother, Nicole, was the daughter of a wealthy landowner, Louis and Danielle de Lancret. She married your father, Auguste de Barbarac, the only son of Sir Jacques and Lady Marie de Barbarac. The manor and the land it's standing on were a wedding present to Auguste from your grandfather. The animals and all of the servants were part of Nicole's dowry. She died the same year you were born, Princess. Your Father left instructions that upon his death, the manor was to go to you," Henry finished. Danielle continued to stare.
"Is that why you decided not to marry the Princess of Spain?" she asked.
Henry looked at her. "No, Princess. I was very upset, humiliated and embarrassed last night. I said some things I didn't mean." He sighed. "Actually, I never went back to my room. Leonardo found me in the library, asleep, holding on to your shoe. It was too late to call off the wedding. The ceremony began as soon as I arrived. I could hear Gabriella crying all the way down the aisle. She never stopped, not even at the altar. I realized then that she didn't want to marry me, either. Just then, I was reminded of our conversation at the gypsy camp. Do you remember?"
"Yes," Danielle said, "About how you didn't want to be King." "How you would never be seen for who you are, but what you are."
Henry smiled and shrugged. "You told me that I would be surprised," he said. "It just dawned on me what you meant. I thought, 'What am I doing?' and I began to laugh. My parents knew something was up, but they didn't try to stop me when I ran out the side door. I think they knew exactly where I was going." They laughed together.
*** Part 4 ****
"Danielle," Henry asked, taking her hands in his, "What happened last night? I mean, before you got here. Leonardo said I could never have imagined it."
This time Danielle sighed. "The Baroness locked me in the cellar for almost two days," she answered. "If Leonardo hadn't taken those hinges off the door, I don't know where I would be now. Or you."
The look on Henry's face was one of disgust. He shook his head. "She locked you in the cellar?" Danielle nodded. Henry couldn't understand it. "For two days?" She nodded again. "It's really true, then, isn't it?
Everything she did to you." Henry brushed away the tears that were welling up in Danielle's eyes. "No wonder you're so full of passion."
"Henry," Danielle said, a little calmer now. "I still don't think it's right, what you and your parents want to do to her."
Henry couldn't believe she was letting her get away with this. "After everything that's happened? You are in a powerful position, Princess. You can have anything you want."
"I don't want to use that power to destroy her," she said, smiling up at him. "Maybe just wound her a little. I still believe that you should do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
Henry looked at her, a sly smile forming on his lips. "You are too much like me, Danielle. I suppose that's why I love you so much." He bent down so no one else could hear. "What did you have in mind?"
The Prince and Princess joined the King and Queen in the garden and informed them of their plan. At the stroke of four, Laurent announced the arrival of the Baroness and her daughters.
"We'd better get inside." King Francis said. "Henry, show Danielle where the audience chamber is."
**** Part 5 ****
Henry took her there through a secret passage, told her where to stand so that no one would see her and where to enter when it was time. They kissed and he went to take his place beside his parents on the dais. Danielle watched as they made their entrance. The Baroness first, followed by Marguerite and Jacqueline. As they made their way down the aisle, Henry tried to keep a straight face. He found it very difficult. When they reached the end, Marguerite and Jacqueline dipped, while the Baroness, in the center, curtsied.
King Francis spoke first. "Baroness," he said, "did you or did you not lie to Her Majesty, the Queen of France?" Rodmilla looked up at him, then at the Queen. Clearly, this is not what she expected.
"Choose your words wisely, madam," Marie said, "for they may be your last."
Henry was smiling again. It was too much effort to stop. The Baroness struggled to get to her feet. She couldn't believe her ears. "A woman would do practically anything for the love of a daughter, your Majesties," she said, "perhaps I did get a little carried away." She saw no other way out. All her hopes and dreams had been dashed to the ground. How could they have known?
Marguerite suddenly came to life. Her shrill voice filled the room. "Mother," she said, rushing forward, "what have you done?" She addressed the Queen." Your Majesty, like you, I'm just a victim here. She has lied to us both and I'm ashamed to call her family."
"How dare you turn on me, you little ingrate," Rodmilla shrieked, pushing her daughter out of the way.
"You see," Marguerite yelled, turning towards the King. "You see what I have to put up with."
"Silence, both of you" the King demanded. "Good Lord," he said, turning to Marie, then to Jacqueline, who was standing in back of Marguerite and Rodmilla, "are they always like this?"
Jacqueline smiled. "Worse, your Majesty," she answered.
The Baroness looked angrily at her, but she kept her voice calm. "Jacqueline, darling," she said, through gritted teeth; "I'd hate to think you had anything to do with this."
"Of course not, Mother," Jacqueline answered, innocently. She looked back at her. "I'm only here for the food."
"Baroness de Ghent," the Queen said, "You are forthwith stripped of your title and you and your horrible daughter are to be shipped to the Americas on the first available boat, unless," she continued, "by some miracle someone here will speak for you."
Well, Henry thought, this is it. This is where she wants her. He kept smiling, not hiding it anymore.
Rodmilla looked around. Everyone was silent. She backed up the aisle looking on either side of her. "There seems to be quite a few people out of town," she replied, shrugging her shoulders.
A voice came from the back of the chamber. "I will speak for her." Rodmilla recognized it. At that moment, each member of the court bowed or curtsied. She looked over at Marguerite who was staring towards the back of the room in amazement.
"She is," the voice continued, "after all, my stepmother." As Rodmilla turned towards Danielle, Henry's smile broadened. He was a little upset that he couldn't see her face as Danielle walked down to meet her. Rodmilla looked at her, not believing what she was seeing. Look at that crown, Rodmilla thought. She's even wearing that necklace the page gave me last Sunday. Finally, she curtsied. "Your Highness," she said.
Now it was Henry's turn. "Marguerite," he called to her from the dais. Marguerite looked up, but Henry wasn't looking at her at all. He was looking at Danielle. "I don't believe you've met".. Henry began, then trailed off. Marguerite was still looking up him, dreading his next words. She really did not want to hear them. "My wife," Henry finished, looking at Marguerite now. Marguerite looked down at the floor. She felt as if a dagger had gone through her heart. Now the secret was out. Henry was almost sorry to see it end, but it was far from over.
"I want you to know," Danielle said, "that I will forget about you after this moment and never think of you again, but you I am quite certain will think about me every single day for the rest of your life."
"And how long might that be?" Rodmilla answered.
Danielle thought about it. She closed her eyes. When she opened them again, she was looking at the King and Queen. "All I ask, your Majesties," she said, "is that you show her the same courtesy that she has bestowed upon me."
At that point, Henry left the dais and walked down the aisle to meet Danielle. He whispered something to Jacqueline and, at the same time, took Danielle's hand. They walked right past Rodmilla and Marguerite, never even giving them a second glance. If they had turned back, the two women might have seen Danielle and Henry's broad smiles. They waited for the King to announce Rodmilla and Marguerite's fate: servants in the Royal laundry starting immediately. Henry, who couldn't hold back anymore, sputtered and began to laugh, almost the same way he had in church that morning. Everyone, including Marguerite and Rodmilla turned toward the back of the room. It was Danielle who grabbed him and pulled him out of the chamber. She was trying not to laugh herself.
*** Part 6 ****
The four of them, Laurent, Jacqueline, Henry and Danielle were still laughing about it later that night at a reception, which was held in the newlywed's honor. Henry and Danielle were listening as Jacqueline spoke of Laurent's marriage proposal earlier that evening. The wedding was to take place late Friday afternoon. Henry laughed as he clapped Laurent on the back. Danielle put her arms around Jacqueline and hugged her.
"I hope you're as happy as I am," she said, letting her go.
Meanwhile, the King and Queen, standing at the railing overlooking the ballroom, were watching them. Henry never looked happier. They couldn't get over how quickly the Prince had changed.
"You know, Marie," the King said, "you were right all along. I'm sorry I didn't listen to you."
"Sometimes," Marie answered, "women do know a little more than men, especially about matters of the heart."
The King smiled. "She is wonderful, isn't she," he said.
The Queen agreed. "Yes, she is, Francis." They smiled at each other as Marie put her arm in his. They gave a final look at the reception, turned and walked towards their apartments.
At that same moment, Henry bent down to whisper something in Danielle's ear and she looked up at him. He took her hand and walked towards the stairwell. On the way, they ran into the King and Queen of Spain who were celebrating the marriage of their daughter.
"We talked them into letting the Princess marry her, um, companion." Henry remembered his Father saying earlier. "He is a nobleman of good character. The King was worried that he was far too old for her." Yes, Henry thought and no peace treaty, but that was all over now.
Henry introduced Danielle to the Princess who introduced her new husband, Prince Ferdinand. Leonardo came by to congratulate them. As soon as Henry saw him, he pulled him close and hugged him.
"Thank you so much," he whispered, "for everything." He couldn't believe he was crying.
Leonardo hugged him back. "Thank me tomorrow, Henry," Leonardo whispered back. He pulled away and went to hug Danielle, leaving Henry to think about his words.
Henry stood there watching Leonardo kiss the new Princess, then gave Henry a glance and smiled. He hurried off, leaving the two of them alone.
"What did he say to you," Henry asked Danielle.
She had caught him looking at them. "Just that, he had a gift for us," she said. "And what did he say to you?"
"Well," Henry said, "I thanked him for everything and he just said 'Thank me tomorrow, Henry.'
"What do you suppose he meant by that?" Danielle started to smile and so did he.
"Would you like to find out?" she asked.
"What, now?" Henry said, smiling, pulling her into his arms.
Danielle pushed away from him. "Come on, I'll bet you can't catch me..."
**** Part 7 ****
"What, now?" Henry said, smiling, pulling her into his arms.
Danielle pushed away from him."Come on, I'll bet you can't catch me."
She started to run up the winding castle stairs. Henry smiled and followed her. She was too quick for him. When he finally reached the top, Danielle had disappeared. Henry called out to her, but she didn't answer. All the rooms on the floor were dark. Each room seemed empty except for the one farthest from the stairs. Something or someone was in there. As he walked in, Henry hadn't seen the pillows that Danielle threw on the floor. He tripped on one and fell on the rest. Danielle was lying on the floor, waiting for him. She grabbed him and they rolled around, tickling each other.
As soon as she was underneath him, he looked down at her, smiling. I've done it, he thought, I've finally beaten her. Or had he? The smile disappeared as he kept looking at her. Henry bent down to kiss her. He felt this fire inside, a passion that he had never known. Suddenly, Henry stood up.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"I'm not sure," he answered, "I never felt this way before." He wanted her. He wanted her so badly. They both stared at each other.
"I'm not sure myself," Danielle said softly, standing up, "I've never felt like this, either."
They looked at each other. After a few minutes, Danielle leaned forward and, without a word, began to untie the belt on his tunic. Henry grabbed her hands and held them tight.
"I'm frightened," he said.
Danielle smiled. He sounded like such a little boy. "I'm frightened, too" she said.
Henry smiled "You, frightened?" He laughed and let go of her hands. He untied the belt and removed the tunic and his shirt. He reached for her and turned her around. As he unhooked the back of her dress, he noticed the scars on her back. Some of the wounds were still healing. As she removed her dress, he slipped out of his breeches. Henry wanted to ask her about those scars as soon as she turned around, but he forgot anything he wanted to say. They were both completely naked. They stood there, staring at one another. Henry finally reached for her and pulled her close. He kissed her hard and she felt him against her. They fell onto the bed and Henry pulled away again, but just long enough for Danielle to reach up and pull him back. This time, they didn't stop.
They were up all night, talking, laughing and making love. Henry found a book and both of them read, one at a time, to each other. They finally fell asleep in each other's arms.
*** Part 8 ****
Henry woke first. He lay on his side; his head propped up under his arm, watching her sleep. She is so beautiful, he thought. He had never realized this until now, especially with the morning light coming in from the window. He reached out one hand to touch her, just to make sure she wasn't a dream. When he was convinced, he touched her cheek. She stirred and Henry pulled away, waiting for her to wake up.
"Good morning, Princess" he said, when she opened her eyes.
At first, Danielle didn't remember where she was. She reached out to touch him, just to make sure he was really there. He took her hand in his. "I'm here," Henry said, nodding his head, smiling. "It's real."
"Henry," she whispered and they kissed each other. They made love one more time before they were interrupted by a knock on the door. It was Laurent reminding them that they were to meet the King and Queen for breakfast.
Henry had other ideas. "Come, he said, "I want you to see something." They washed and dressed quickly, the same clothes they had on the night before. Henry led her up another stairway; this one led to one of the Castle's many parapets.
"I thought we'd watch the sun rise," he said "but we're too late." He looked around.
"It's beautiful up here, Henry," Danielle said.
"I used to come up here to get away from my Latin tutor." He laughed, looking at her. "I'd stay up here for what seemed to be hours. At least until I thought he left, anyway. But whenever I came down, there he was, waiting." Henry smiled, thinking about it. "Lately, I've come up here to be alone." He looked at her. "This is where Leonardo brought me your shoe that night," he said. They looked at each other. "I kept hearing his voice: 'She's your match, Henry,' he said. He touched her cheek and smiled. "I know what Leonardo meant now," he said, smiling, "that night after the ball and last night. He was right."
They both laughed and he put his arms around her. They were ready to kiss each other when they heard the
clock downstairs strike eight. Danielle reminded him about breakfast and they ran down the stairs.
They met the King and Queen in what Henry referred to as "the breakfast corner" because that was where
Henry always sat when he ate breakfast. Sure enough, that's where he ended up this time, too, although he didn't mind it so much. The King told Danielle that the manor belonged to her and she could do as she wanted with it. With her permission and only her permission, Francis continued, the house would belong to the Royal family and, if Henry agreed, it would become their new home. Danielle quickly agreed. She couldn't wait to return to her own home.
Henry, knowing the way Danielle felt about the manor smiled and agreed.
That was where they went after breakfast, but not before the Queen presented Henry with some gifts for
Danielle. There was his grandmother's tiara, a silver comb and brushes for her hair.
The King and Queen saw them off and they promised to return to the castle later that night. Laurent went with them to see Jacqueline.
**** Part 8 ****
On the way over, Henry asked her about the scars on her back. She explained what had happened and how they got there. She asked him about finding another copy of Utopia. In the middle of the story, she began to cry and Henry held her, promising he would give her his copy, even though, he knew, it would never replace the one her father had brought home.
Leonardo was waiting for them outside the manor along with Paulette, Louise and Maurice. Henry took him aside, hugged him and thanked him again. Danielle went with Laurent to hug Jacqueline, who had been standing beside Leonardo. Henry was blushing as Leonardo kidded him about his wedding night. Just then, Maurice asked everyone to gather in the drawing room.
Henry and Leonardo split up. Leonardo walked towards the center of the room while Henry joined Danielle, opposite Leonardo, in front of the drawing room table. Clustered around the back of the table were Maurice and Louise. They stood at one end of the room while Laurent and Jacqueline stood at the other. Paulette and Gustave stood at the far right, in front of the table. It was then that Leonardo unveiled a rather stunning portrait of Princess Danielle.
"Oh, Leonardo," she said, walking over to hug him, "It's wonderful."
"Think of it as a belated wedding present, your Highness," he said.
Danielle turned around when she heard Gustave laugh. "What?" she said.
"I still can't get over it," Gustave laughed as Paulette hit him on the head, "Your Highness," and he gave a little curtsy.
"Yes, well," Danielle answered, "Royalty or not, I can still whip you."
She tickled him and pinched his nose.
Henry watched them, smiling, as he walked over to da Vinci. "I must say, Leonardo," he said, "that for a man of your talents, it doesn't look a thing like her."
He laughed and waited for Danielle's response. Sure enough, he heard her shoes clatter across the floor. She took his hands and pulled him into the window, the both of them laughing.
"You sir," she said, "are supposed to be charming."
"And we, Princess," Henry answered, "are supposed to live happily ever after."
"Say's who?" Danielle said.
Henry stopped smiling. He thought about it for a minute. She had him again. "You know," he said, "I don't know."
They both smiled at each other and kissed; unaware that anyone else was even in the room.
The End For Now ....
